The only way to move around the Svalbard Islands during summer is by sea. S/V Linden is a 50-meter-long, three-masted, wooded schooner. Whether you are standing on deck, searching for wildlife, or falling asleep to the creaking sounds of a wooden ship, when you are on board of Linden, you are at one with the harsh surroundings and striking beauty of the Arctic.

 You will board and disembark Linden in Longyearbyen and from there, we will explore the different fjords of Spitsbergen. 

Our tours are true Arctic expeditions, meaning we will have outlined plans. However, those plans may be subject to change as the weather, wind, and ice conditions determine where and how we travel throughout our journey.

5 days around Isfjorden

The 5-day tour will take you around the different corners of Isfjorden. Each branch in the fjord is different, from green mountain sides filled with birdlife to ice packed glacier fronts with polar bears lurking around the corner.

7 days around Isfjorden

The 7 day tour will take you around the inner and outer parts of Isfjord. You will both see the best branches of Isfjorden as well as the hidden gems outside of the fjord system. Depending on the weather, we will either travel north or south along the coast to visit Walrus colonies.

This tour will bring you on a true expedition in the foot steeps of Amundsen, Nansen and Shackleton. Few people can say they have circumnavigated Svalbard on a wooden Tall ship, and explored some of the most remote places on earth.

The Route

The wind and weather will dictate the route we will take. We prefer to work with the conditions nature gives us, instead of working against wind and sea to do a specific route. We set out with a plan, but it can quickly change according to the weather. Our 5 and 7 days trips around isfjorden will take you to many of the same places. The 7 day trip gives you a bigger timeframe to experience different wildlife.

Logistics

You will fly in and out from the airport in Longyearbyen. We recommend spending a day or two in Longyearbyen, either before or after the tour with linden. There is wide range of accommodation opportunities as-well as activities to do. You are required to carry a valid passport, and some nationalities require a visa in advance. Please check visa and immigration requirements.

We strongly recommend you to buy a personal travel insurance.

Clothing and equipment

Summer in the Arctic, is very unpredictable. It can be sunny and 10 degrees celsius, and suddenly the weather can change to be minus 5 degrees celsius (feels like -10) with cold winds and snow furries. We usually say that you will experience all 4 seasons during the duration of the trip. Clothing wise, we recommend that you follow the 3 layer principal, starting with a solid wool layer closest to the body, adding another layer with a warm sweater or fleece and some outdoor trousers. And a final layer water and wind proof layer of jacket and trousers. Some good qulity wool socks, waterproof mittens or gloves and a warm beanie or hat.

We recommend bringing the following equipment:

- Camera

- A good pair of binoculars (they will quickly become your best friend)

- Sunglasses (the sun can be very sharp)

- A trekking pole is nice to have, but not a need to have.

- Hiking boots or warm waterproof rubber boots.

- Water-resistant or water-proof backpack or similar for carrying cameras and equipment during landings. Alternatively, a plastic bag inside a traditional backpack will do the job.

- Lip balm and hand lotion. Your skin tend to dry out in cold and dry air.

There will be down suits free to your disposal onboard.
